How Online Communities Make You Money

The business model for online communities is usually based on advertising. Because the focus is on members and encouraging their interaction, communities tend to generate a lot of page views. Once you install advertising code (whether from AdSense, affiliate ads, or custom sponsorships), those page views can start turning into money without much more work from you. This audience-contributed content and scalability (Click Millionaires Success Principles #5 and #6 respectively) are a large part of the reason I recommend communities.

It’s true that far more people read than comment or post in online forums, but don’t underestimate the importance of these “lurkers.” While it’s said that only 1 percent of people post a lot, and the next 9 percent of members do most of the commenting, it’s that remaining 90 percent that ensures your ads get clicked on, too.
